ON-going Projects at NorthStar.

LATEST:

AUG 7 John has been adding loam around the track edges to control the drop off at the verges. Aaron got the stands jogged into perfect placement on last Saturday, Edges of pad have been tamped, flagpole brought over to edge gravel base. Stair moved into place for grandstands at end of Saturday 7th racedayReady for metal cover plates to be reinstalled between the sections of stands. Seat plate do not need to be installed between the center and West sections - all floor plate must be installed.
Water trailer updated. Golf cart rear seat in town ready to install after next race (will need to update hitch with seat installed)

COMPLETED: July 31 - Last week saw general ongoing facility maintenance - John cutting and weedwacking grass, ongoing watering of the paddock and track, while Fred started repairs to the garbage bin enclosure.

Ju;y 27 Peter installed a paving stone path to the Atco registrationn building and Dave finished painting the Crow's Nest.
Mario and Blake helped extend / rework the gravel pad for the stands - they will be rotated about 20 degrees to the West to give a better view of the action when they are replaced. Three members have volunteered picker trucks so they should be back on the pad soon. and then we will be ready to reinstall the plates between the sections and we will have to relocate the stairs. Should have the stands ready soon.

UPCOMING: Chainsaw needed for telephone poles and fence posts around pregrid extension (Mark has volunteered).
Reinstall connector plates between the stand sections. Install safety netting (Paul has stepped up, and netting is in process). Relocate stairs to match up to new stand location.

With the facility operational we are moving away from the work party concept and encouraging individuals and groups to take on specific projects - maybe come early to the T&T and put in a little time on the facility rather than donate a whole day of your weekend to a work party during the racing season.

Some of these like grass cutting etc will be ongoing and some like securing the scale house to the asphalt surface are obviously one time projects.

As such we will be updating the project list as attached as people step forward to take responsibility for an identified task.

Everyone is encouraged to talk to the executive and / or manager about taking on some of these roles. You can email via the contacts page or better yet come talk at lunchtime on Race Days, or at T&T so that we can discuss the concept and targets for each project on site.

If you have suggestions for ongoing or capital projects we can add those to this list.

July 31 The Grandstands have been put back in place on the gravel pad (thanks to Dallas, Matt and Dan who all volunteered picker trucks). They have been rotated about 20 degrees and every seat now has a view of the entire front straight including turn one at the South West end of the track. This means that we are ready for those people not in Edmonton who have some free time this weekend to come out and help reassemble the stands. If we get a big crew there is lots of other work to do too. John and Fred are in Edmonton racing but I should be at the track by 11 AM - if you get there earlier there is some obvious clean up to do around the grandstands - and there are more tasks identified in the attached file.

PLAN TO SECURE THE SCALE SHACK:

We have a plan for securing the scale house to the ground.

The concept is to spike the base of the walls to the ground with three foot long lengths of ½ rebar that will be run into the ground with either a hammer drill or sledge hammer.

The rebar will go into the ground from the inside of the building to the outside at 45° into the ground.
Three lengths down each side, approximately at the corners and middle of the wall.
Two at each end of the building – one on either side of the doors for a total of 10 spike.

Because the building walls are not sitting flush to the asphalt we will need to shim the building walls around the points where the walls are spiked. We can seal/shim the walls with cold pack asphalt mix available at Rona, Home Depot etc.

We can finish shimming the walls at a later date to keep rodents etc out.
Spiking the building to the ground this way should get it ready to pass inspection for the occupancy permit.

Latest news;

Aug 17 Aaron and John installed the floor plates between the sections of stands. Terry and Tony raised the front handrails (still need to install a few bolts - ran out of 2&3/4 x 3/8) but everything lined up and drilled. Bolted stairs to side of stands. Removed some excess gravel from pad and spiked a telephone pole along the south edge - we must be moving on to a new phase of beautification - John has started planting trees too.

We still need to make progress on the scale shed - latest thought is to seal / shim the bottom of the walls with cold pack asphalt from Rona etc and then spike to ground rather than trying to shim with wood and boarding the 40' sea container with fireproof wall board.

Sept 20
Been a while since the last update – work has been progressing in the interim, just had less time to update this file with new job.

SCALE HOUSE:
Dan has completed shimming and spiking the scale house in place to meet code. In coming days and weeks he is planning to install skirting at around the bottom of the wall.
Now the walls and roof are secured the scale will be raised by hoist and the feet adjust to prevent karts scraping as they are pushed off the scale.

Tech area gates have been installed.

GRANDSTANDS:
We have completed landscaping between the stands and track fence to lower and soften any potential falls. An extra length of chain has been installed between floor level and the handrail middle cross bar for additional safety. Awaiting engineering approval on stands.

New cellular modem antenna purchased and installed.

TRACK LANDSCAPING:
More loan has been spread in the low spots at the edges of track.

As you can see from the attached file there is still lots to do this year as we work towards gaining our occupancy permit from Strathmore. So if you have the time at the end of the racing season to do some volunteer work before the snow flies please be ready to join in as we organize some work parties this Fall.

Northstar Volunteer Projects.docThanks to Peter and Mark the eaves and roof on the scale shack are in fie shape again - just one section of siding to replace by the man door. But the scale house is complete as far as an occupancy permit goes now that Dan has shimmed and properly secured the walls.

Still lots to do at the upcoming end of season work party weekend as on updated list below
