So I purchased and older shifter kart to mess around with my boys when they practice (briggs). Couldn’t pass up the deal but know I have to get this thing going and I have no idea where to start. It seems the kart was stored and all the fluids were drains. Chassis has no markings on it so I do not know what it is, brakes say ARI kart? Motor looks to be an old Pavesi LAM95, seems to have good compression, carb was smooth. What kind of transmission oil should I use and how much? Any other suggestions.
Thanks

Re: Help with older shifter!
I believe that's the old rotary valve Pavesi.
Not sure about those ones, but you may find information online.

Re: Help with older shifter!
I have tried online, very little information. Most of the info I found online is forum some U.K. Sites and some from Italy, but still not very informative. Hopefully someone can give me some guidance.

Re: Help with older shifter!
Those Pavesi motors used to be fairly common around our club back in the day (1996-2009). With the carb on the front of the motor, that one is a reed motor and it has the first carb that was used before the motors went to an ICC class designation. Both were 30mm bore. We ran the Pavesi Reed with the big 38mm magnesium bodied carb under Formula C configuration. I have never heard of an ARI Kart but most of the chassis accessories on it are Righetti Ridolfi such as the pedals, steering hub, etc. The chassis is fairly old but newer than 2003 as that is when this type of bodywork was homologated.

Re: Help with older shifter!
Thanks for the replies, this kart takes me back to my childhood, always wanted a shifter but they were out of reach for my family. Now I have 2 boys running Briggs Jr, on off weekend when we go and practice I can get on with them and try to keep up!!! Just need to get more info as to what kind of gear oil to use, how much etc.

Hi,
We have always used Motul trans oil, which you can get at many motorcycle shops.
Here is some info on care and feeding of the Pavesi: http://swedetechracing.com/techinfo/?cid=65384

Re: Help with older shifter!
Someone on Facebook just told me to used redline gear oil. For the gas/oil would you recommend the motul kart oil? It’s what we use in the VLR motors now. The guy said make sure the oil has castor? In it….

Re: Help with older shifter!
As far as I know the, cast iron bore motors such as the ROK shifter and VLR like Castor oil and the Chrome bore motors like synthetic better. That old Pavesi is a chrome bore or nikasil type bore cylinder. Motul is great but sometimes harder to find. XPS full synthetic oils are available at ski-doo dealers and work great. I run the XPS in all of my 2 cycle kart motors. (VLR, ROK Shifter and RotaxMax)

Re: Help with older shifter!
Can you send me a pic of the trans oil? I went to my local Canadian tire, they no longer carry redline and didn’t have motul trans oil, they had royal purple and Lucas synthetic, would any of those work?John Kwong wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 7:35 pm Hi,

Re: Help with older shifter!
Yes, those would work. You want a synthetic because it will lubricate better. Motul is usually found at dedicated motorcycle shops which you should be able to google to see who is near you.
