My thoughts here are probably moving outside the scope of what John has originally brought up.

If there is the possibility of getting a grant, and based on John's AI summary, it looks like it could be quite large. What are thoughts around removing the seacan and making a proper structure, with handicap accessibility and better storage for AMRA. Could be a win win all around. It would be more costly, but if it was grant eligible, then it might be worth it. It could be part of some sort of master plan on improving the facility.

But again that brings its own host of problems. I think whatever we did, would be worth it! I always like seeing ideas of how to improve the facility. I do like Johns idea of added supports. It wouldn't be that hard to make what would effectively be a roof cover for the seacan that is load bearing.

These are all good intentions for making this more accessible and I think a grant for a lift or elevator to provide access can be applied for later. I believe any grant would only be for the modifications to make it accessible and not the actual deck itself. An area could be designed into the edge of the platform to allow for this future modification. The mechanics, other interested racers and possibly some public would be the primary users of this viewing area. Do we have any engineers in the club that can design something based on my draft that we can get quotes for materials?

The strength in a sea can is at it's 4 corners. If you build a deck such that the load is placed at the 4 corners then that's all you need. Now a 40' can is too long for an unsupported lumber span so you would need either a centre support or perhaps I-beams.

I suggest that you consider the possibility of the can shifting under the weight over time like the timing tower stack did, and the possible need to move it (the can) at some point in the future.\

Regarding handicap access, we had a kart racer in the 1980's named Ben Reimer who was lower body paralized. He modified his kart with seatbelts, hand controls and a roll cage. He was a competitive racer, and his able bodied son Mason also raced. I remember one race when a torrential downpour stalled the karts and shut down the race. At one point someone asked where Ben was? We ran out to the track and found him in his stalled kart and got him either restarted or pushed him back to the grid!
