I have two kids who will be starting in the Briggs Jr2 class, and I am a bit confused regarding the rib protector rules.

Youth Chest Protectors that meet or exceed SFI Spec 20.1 Go-Kart Chest Protector (Youth Driver up to age 12) standard are required.
FIA Standard 8870-2018 body protection is recommended for National events and may be required at International events.

When we did our try-a-kart session, the kids just wore a standard rib protector (the ones with the Italian flag on them). Do the kids need the chest protector (both 11)? If not, how much is it recommended? If so, there are not many used ones listed meaning we need to look new. The armadillo ones are not FIA Standard 8870-2018 but reasonable priced. How important is the FIA Standard 8870-2018? I understand that right now it's just for National/International events, but does anyone know if the club will adopt this rule in the near future?

Welcome to the club and good question.

The disparity between international competitions and club competition with regard to chest protectors has existed for a couple years. Initially there were concerns around supply and cost but those concerns are gradually being addressed with more cost effective solutions and better availability. However, those requirements have still not been made mandatory at the club level. It is possible that the protectors become mandatory at some point.

However, at our club the armadillo protector has been the defacto standard for children for a long time. It is made to a us standard and not the FIA standard as you point out. For children the age of yours, without a fully developed sternum a center pad is an important piece of protection . I would strongly suggest the armadillo or a model with this protection for competitive racing but I am not sure if it is mandatory given their age. Just note that racing wheel to wheel is much different than the controlled try a kart environment.

Whatever you decide to do with the chest protectors, you should know that for children, a children’s snell certified helmet is mandatory. Note that those helmets are not the same as adult helmets and helmets are checked during pre race inspections on race days.
