The Calgary Kart Racing Club was established in the early 1960’s. It has survived many generations of karters and raced at many different venues through the years. The one constant has been the great people that have enjoyed the camaraderie of kart racing. It began as a small, dedicated group of individuals racing in Calgary area parking lots, and evolved to what is today a well organized, thriving non-profit organization with its own purpose built track just east of the town of Strathmore. The CKRC organizes approximately ten regular season sprint race events and one Endurance (“Enduro”) event from April through October as well as regularly scheduled practice sessions throughout the summer. The CKRC is a member group of the FIA though its Canadian affiliate ASN Canada.
1959-1971 – Parking lots mostly and also included a few enduro race events at Stampede Park, a short term race track in Aylith near the train rail yards and a one off event at the De Winton airfield.
1972-1980 – There was no local track in Calgary and hardcore racers went to the St. Albert track in Edmonton to race
1981-1982 – Mount Royal College/Canadian Armed Forces base airstrip
1982-1983 – Deerfoot Mall North East side parking lot pylon course
1984-1999 – Kart Gardens was a dream come true. Most of our club members had only ever driven on temporary parking lot courses lined with pylons to mark the track area. It was built near the Calgary International Airport on the corner of Barlow Trail and Highway 2A and was a 12 turn, 1 km road circuit that was 30 feet wide.
2000 – Pylon course set-up inside the Race City Oval
2001-2013 – Varsity Speed Park was the next logical step for the club. Our own facility gave us greater control of our destiny and vastly improved racing.
2014-present – Strathmore Motorsports Park
Strathmore Motorsports Park is located in the Town limits of Strathmore, a 30 minute drive East of Calgary City limits.
Construction began in July 2014 and was completed by Mid October of the same year. The track is 9m wide and 1225m long. Asphalt used was City “B” mix. The track has approximately 10m of elevation, rising and falling around a very exciting 14 turn technical layout. Excellent spectator sightlines allow fans to see much of the racing action. The first CKRC Race at Strathmore Motorsports Park was held on May 31, 2015.
